Cultivation Advice | Salvia, or Clary, a tender perennial, hardy to around -4°C (25°F) so it may survive a mild winter in sheltered locations, especially so if given some protection. Flowering from May through to the first frost Salvia is a fabulous addition to summer borders, attracting butterflies by the dozen, and its blooms are wonderful for both cutting and drying. Salvia is also marvellous for coastal gardens, Mediterranean or wildlife gardens, and for patio or container planting. Sow Salvia seeds from February to May onto the surface of a moist, free-draining, seed sowing compost. Ideally minimise root disturbance by planting into coir growing cells or similar, or directly into 4 inch pots rather than seed trays. Germination is erratic but normally takes around 14 – 42 days at 20-23C. Keep the germinating seedlings moist at all times, without overwatering. Maintain good air movement through the seedlings, watering in the morning rather than the evening to keeping the foliage dry. Move the plants to outdoor positions at the end of May or early June gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for at least two weeks before planting into their final positions, ideally in groups of three, spaced 15 to 30cm or 6 to 12inches apart. Pinch out growing tip when plants are 15cm (6in) tall to encourage bushy growth. Water, fertilise and dead-head regularly. After the very first frost the tuberous root can be lifted and store in 'just moist' peat or compost for the winter (as you would Dahlias), alternatively wait until new growth begins to emerge in early spring to do your winter cleanup of old stems to avoid freeze damage. The best time to divide perennial salvias is in early spring, before new growth begins. |
